The Big Interdisciplinary Archaeological Database (BIAD) has been under construction by members of the COREX Project and many other collaborating projects since 2021. Currently BIAD predominantly covers Europe c. 6000 to 500 BCE, but continues to expand in scope with ambitions to incorporate all types of archaeological data from around the world. Datasets are properly integrated within a relational structure, currently including archaeobotany, radiocarbon dates, zooarchaeology, grave constructions, demography, health, stable isotopes, material culture, metallurgy, funeral rites and monument formation processes.
This poster gives a brief introduction of the project and then provides a series of guidelines for the publication of archaeological data for the facilitation of big data projects. The guidelines are based on five years collecting, harmonising and relating published data into BIAD and represent the collected suggestions of a team of c. 20 topical specialists working with the data types listed above. Advantages to publishing in a big-data friendly manner support FAIR principles, increasing the usefulness, impact and reach of data, whilst also increasing the frequency of citations for data contributors.
