Introduction to Discovering Hidden Archaeology with High-Performance Airborne LiAR
Yamaha Motor is exploring the use of airborne LiDAR surveying with long-endurance unmanned helicopters for archaeological and heritage application. By flying at low altitude for extended periods with high-performance LiDAR systems, our approach can capture not only ground surfaces beneath dense vegetation but also detailed three-dimensional forest structure, including individual three stems. This provides a distinctive combination of coverage and data density for challenging environments. We have recently conducted archaeological survey activities in the Copan region of Honduras, applying these technologies to support the identification and visualization of archaeological features beneath vegetation. At EAA 2026, we hope to share our experience, learn from current archaeological LiDAR research, and explore opportunities for collaboration with researchers and instructions working on landscape archaeology, remote sensing, and surveys in challenging.
